The Directorate for School and University Education ensures the management of the missions entrusted by law to municipalities concerning primary education, implements the optional skills the town council of Dijon has decided to adopt with regard to help given to families and students, extracurricular activities, school meals and higher education. Its action is made possible thanks to the credits allotted each year to the field of education (46 M€ in 2004, i.e. 20 % of the expenditure classified by service to the population) and by the 1080 permanent and temporary council workers attached to it. It concerns the some 13 000 school children of Dijon and the 32 000 students attending higher education establishments in Dijon.

It comprises 6 different departments :

. School life department
This department is charged with the management of the means for operating State schools (credits and technologies), school enrolments and sector dispensations, school funds, the council workers assigned to schools, relations with private schools under contract, maintenance and renovation of the school heritage in cooperation with the Heritage Directorate and the Directorate for Architecture, buildings and workshops, and school furniture. It also manages the enrolments and the billing of extracurricular activities and school meals.

. Higher Education Department
This department is charged with missions taken on by the town council in addition to those of the State, higher education establishments, the Region and the Communauté de l’agglomération dijonnaise (Comadi). In particular, it therefore implements the development convention concluded between the University, Comadi and the town council of Dijon, and handles the dossiers for municipal grants intended for students living in Dijon.

. Educational Policies Department
This department is charged with all the extracurricular receiving structures, the morning and afternoon break, created within the State schools in Dijon, both from an administrative point of view and concerning the organisation staff. It is particularly involved in the setting up of the extracurricular side of the local educational Project (Pel) of the City of Dijon.

. School meals department
Charged with the preparation of the meals by the central kitchens, their distribution among the school canteens in Dijon and the service ensured.

. Centre multimédia des Grésilles
Jointly managed by the Association départementale des pupilles de l’enseignement public de la Côte d’Or (Adpep 21), National Education and the local authorities, this mission of this structure is to familiarise schools with the new information technologies, sound and image, and to mobilise them for the social and citizen integration of the inhabitants of the quarter. It also manages the Points d’accès numériques de Dijon et son agglomération (Panda).

. Clos Chauveau, establishment for children with special needs
Managed by the Association départementale des Pupilles de l’enseignement public de la Côte d’Or (Adpep 21), this establishment is for children and adolescents with special educational needs, spastics, problems with hearing and sight and more complex language difficulties. They are either taught on the spot or attend local schools. Its outdoor school has the same status as an ordinary local primary school.
